BorderWare: 80% of Company E-mail Spam

It is likely that the most common annoyance among e-mail users is the occurrence of spam and having to filter through bogus e-mails to get to the ones we actually need to read. However, what if you were a company who was unknowingly attached to spam e-mails and as a result your official company e-mails were permanently blocked from a recipient?

BorderWare (News - Alert) Technologies has announced that its real-time, multi-application reputation service, BorderWare Security Network (BSN), reported that in e-mail traffic from individual organizations, over 80 percent of it is sent from IP addresses outside of their domain. The majority of this unauthorized e-mail is malicious or spam and does not originate from the organization. As a result, legitimate organizations are being incorrectly labeled as spammers caused by e-mails that are blocked unbeknownst to them.

BSN conducts ongoing, real-time reputation analysis of the content that is sent from IPs, domains and users across multiple applications, such as e-mail, Web, IM and VoIP. BorderWare established more than 30 metrics for BSN to use to detect potentially compromised or infected traffic. When detection is made, individual domain or user behaviors are flagged, graded and rejected, ensuring that legitimate traffic can be sent and received without delay while compromised traffic is rejected.

Traditional reputation systems that focus primarily on e-mail base their reputation score on the traffic monitored from an IP address. The problem is that many businesses and individuals today utilize service provider or hosted mail systems that share an IP address with many domains.

“Previous results from reputation services incorrectly identified enterprises as sending a large volume of spam with incorrect analysis based only on volume,” said Tim Leisman, CEO, BorderWare Technologies, in a Tuesday statement.

“We’ve identified that over 80% of mail from enterprise domains does not actually come from the organization and most of this mail is spam. The real-time content inspection of BSN provides us with a much more detailed view of this traffic.”

With better insight into what is going on with e-mails, organizations can ensure that legitimate e-mails reach the intended party and that spam e-mails are effectively blocked. When the two become confused in the system, business processes can be affected and productivity can be hurt.

BorderWare domain and user reputation is a new patent-pending technology and approach to fight against the increase of sophisticated online threats. The new approach is an evolution of today’s reputation services, elevating threat detection from macro-level IP-only trend analysis to a real-time micro-assessment of content from multiple users and domains. Real-time behavior data for all IP addresses can be viewed on the public BSN Web portal (http://bsn.borderware.com).
