Super Bowl Uses Thermal Printers from Zebra Technologies
By Calvin Azuri TMCnet Contributing Editor
Thermal printers made by Zebra Technologies have been chosen for use during Super Bowl XLII, being played this Sunday in Phoenix, Arizona, by the New York Giants and New England Patriots. The technology assists in identifying emergencies and providing control systems for site access, which is crucial in any crowded facility. The University of Phoenix Stadium — which, incidentally, has been fitted with Sumitomo Electric’s air-blown fiber for the latest networking flexibility — seats more than 63,000 people.
The printing components that have been selected for security use at the Super Bowl are the Zebra TLP 3844-Z compact thermal printers. Zebra’s printers form an integral part of the identification system manufactured by Salamander Technologies.
Salamander Technologies has agreed a contract with Rock West Technology and Glendale Fire Department to provide its Rapid TAG feature within the Super Bowl stadium and its Fire TRAX feature on the outer perimeters of the area. Both of these technologies have been approved by NIMS (National Incident Management System) at the Department of Homeland Security. They have been authorized for disaster management and critical response.
The Rapid TAG solution from Salamander Technologies enables security staff to control access to the stadium. The technology is integrated with a scanner which can record identification information. Once the information has been verified, the Zebra printers can print out a coded pass which measures 3x5 inches. The printed passes must then be worn by visitors so that they can be checked whenever necessary. The Fire TRAX technology operates an electronic incident command which can be used to keep track of security devices and staff.

Vice president for sales at Rock West, Steve Benitez, praised the technology by saying, “Our Salamander accountability systems require different types of bar coded tags to be created quickly right at the scene. These include site access and ID tags for emergency response personnel, emergency equipment ID tags, and wristband IDs for potential patients or evacuees. The Zebra desktop model TLP 3844-Z can handle all three types of media interchangeably, with speed and efficiency. Plus, they are compact enough to fit inside our portable incident management kits, rugged enough to withstand heavy use, and simple enough for non-technical personnel to use in the field.”
The Rock West Technology Group is a leader in providing security solutions in the Southwest. It offers solutions for electronic precision and photo identification.
Salamander Technologies is renowned nationally for its security solutions. The company prides itself on designing components that work to improve the performance of security personnel in high risk situations.
