SPIRIT, HTC Develop Video-over-IP Handset
By Niladri Sekhar Nath TMCnet Contributing Editor
SPIRIT DSP (News - Alert), provider of embedded voice, audio and video software products, and High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), Windows Mobile based smart-phone OEM, have teamed to integrate TeamSpirit Mobile Voice&Video Engine into tri-band 3G
phones from HTC in Europe and HTC-Z in Japan.
HTC-Z is the first HSDPA-enabled Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows Mobile 5.0 device, offering fast speeds for Internet and downloading along with superb video calling support. The handset features Wi-Fi
, 3G, tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Bluetooth connectivity. HTC-Z also comes with a front-facing digital camera for video telephony.
TeamSpirit Mobile Voice&Video Engine also adds complete video telephony functionalities to the mobile devices. The Voice&Video engine is integrated with SIP
and therefore can be used on any network, including Wi-Fi, in 200 countries.
According to the company, the TeamSpirit Mobile Voice&Video Engine does not rely on a specific carrier and can be easily integrated with any communication/collaboration software or/and hardware platform. The engine facilitates real-time video-over-IP
calls while fitting into 200 MHz performance footprint, making possible to run the mass-market video telephony on standard off-the-shelf devices.
“This joint HTC-SPIRIT project is the second deal between the companies in 2007. We are glad to keep expanding our partnership with HTC that started in 2005,” said Alex Kravchenko, VP Sales & Marketing at SPIRIT. “Today besides HTC, SPIRIT software products are deployed by Compal, Quanta, Arima and other leading mobile OEMs in Asia, Europe and US, whose smart-phone shipments jointly exceed 55% of the global OEM/ODM market.”
