Macrovision Completes Gemstar TV Acquisition

Macrovision has released an announcement stating it has completed the acquisition of Gemstar TV Guide, further cementing its status as a key enabler of the digital home entertainment experience.

Macrovision enables the digital home entertainment experience by allowing businesses to protect, enhance, and distribute digital goods to consumers across multiple channels. Gemstar TV Guide is provider of video and entertainment guidance technology and services.

The consolidated companies will be called Macrovision Solutions Corporation, concentrating on program guides, connected services, and device connectivity. Their combined potential will allow consumer electronics manufacturers, system operators, content providers, and Web portals to bring innovative products to market faster than ever.

“As the digital entertainment industry has recently evolved, we have focused our efforts on enabling our customers to respond to the demand for open, easy-to-use and integrated capabilities that deliver on the promise of the digital home,” said Fred Amoroso, CEO and President of Macrovision Corporation. “Gemstar-TV Guide adds important capabilities to our existing portfolio and roadmap for the digital entertainment market. The combination of the two organizations extends the offerings that support the entire value chain associated with providing and managing consumer and commercial content, while driving the advancement of the connected home.”

The promise of a connected digital home has seen many disappointments, but now may be on the path to becoming a sustainable reality. As the digital home emerges, the impact on service providers, hardware vendors, and network infrastructure providers will vary, but will be significant nevertheless. The ability to move quickly to address customer demands and adapt to developing technologies will be the key to success, and incumbency will be no guarantee, and appropriate foresight will have the potential to create a new breed of vendor.

Macrovision will use the transformation of this digital entertainment industry into a business and the surfacing distribution models designed for customer priorities as an opportunity to place itself better in the market.
