Motorola Gearing up for Demonstrating CDMA Femtocell Solution at CTIA

Motorola (News - Alert) previewed during a Web cast today its upcoming demonstrating for its expanded femtocell portfolio, including its CDMA solution. The company next week will role out the full plan during  CTIA (News - Alert) Wireless 2008 in Las Vegas.

The expansion to its current line of femtocell customer premises equipment (CPE), including the company’s first 3G UMTS femtocell CPE was first announced last month, with the CDMA-based femtocell enhances the company’s end-to-end femtocell portfolio.

The addition of the CDMA femtocell combined with the previously announced 3G UMTS solution means Motorola offers a portfolio of femtocell solutions for both technologies, said Darren McQueen, vice president, IMS, Cellular and Broadband Network Technologies at Motorola Home & Networks Mobility.

“From infrastructure to CPE, Motorola’s experience in leading the development of femtocell technology is further fuelling the deployment and adoption of femtocells as a smart solution to connect to a consumer’s existing broadband service and provide higher-quality, higher-performance wireless voice and real-time data services inside the home,” said McQueen.

Femtocells are small, low-cost and low-power cellular access points that connect to a consumer’s existing broadband Internet service, enabling operators to provide higher-quality and higher-performance wireless voice and real-time data services to their customers inside their homes. The CDMA femtocell solution is expected to be commercially available in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Motorola is a leader in bridging IP and wireless networks. By utilizing standard communication protocols such as Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) (SIP), Motorola’s femtocell solution will enable CDMA wireless carriers to accelerate the use of their IP-based core networks to immediately take advance of cost and service advantages that IP delivers. Motorola's CDMA femtocell uniquely supports both 1xRTT and EV-DO technologies and can be deployed in a vendor's CDMA network. The solution also leverages a Femto Network Gateway (News - Alert) designed to address the mobility, performance and security issues facing wireless carriers that use the Internet to extend their radio access network.

“With the addition of our CDMA femtocell portfolio, we can offer a fully tested and integrated, low-risk, fast-to-market solution to an even broader range of wireless and broadband users,” said McQueen.

McQueen also noted that the femtocell’s were designed for high quality service levels, enhancing the portfolio through Motorola’s NBBS device management system.

The NBBS platform is a scaleable service and CPE management system that enables an excellent end user experience while minimizing WiMAX, GSM and CDMA operators’ support cost, helping them to accelerate the introduction of new services and devices, according to the company.

Femtocells enable a lower cost of delivery for wireless traffic in comparison to a macrocell network. For consumers, femtocells enable a seamless communication experience as they roam from inside to outside their homes, reduced “in-home” call charges, improved indoor coverage and consolidated billing.

Motorola is a member of the Femto Forum, the independent industry association that supports femtocell deployment worldwide.
