AT&T Expanding Wireless and Broadband Coverage in Mississippi; Plans to Invest $66 Million in Network Upgrades in 2008

The U.S. telecommunications company, AT&T (News - Alert), Inc., plans to invest more than $66 million in its Mississippi network to expand wireless coverage.

This year, the company is expected to add 70 new cell sites in the state, and roll out its 3G wireless network in Biloxi, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Meridian, Oxford, Starkville, Columbus and Vicksburg by the end of 2008. In addition, AT&T is also planning to expand third-generation (3G) coverage in the Jackson metropolitan area.

From 2005 through 2007, it has invested $717 million in Mississippi’s wired and wireless networks. AT&T states that it has “delivered dramatic changes in Mississippi through the introduction of its 3G wireless broadband network in Jackson last fall.”

“High-quality coverage and the ability to communicate wherever you are and however you want -- those are our goals,” said Joe Larussa, vice president and general manager of wireless operations in the Gulf states, in a press release.

He also said in a statement that customers rely on AT&T for “exceptional service, and this investment is a testament that being the best communications and entertainment company for our customers is paramount.”

Last year, AT&T deployed more than 45 new cell sites in Mississippi. In the next several months, new sites and other network enhancements will be deployed in areas, including Tutwiler, Holmesville, Melvin, Pinehurst Lake, Tangipahoa River, Smithdale, and Webb.

Indicating that AT&T is committed to the state of Mississippi, Mayo Flynt, president at AT&T Mississippi, said, “The investments by AT&T will have a positive impact at both the state and community levels, in addition to the benefits that our customers will receive.”

This year, AT&T is also expected to expand its wireless 3G network in the U.S. to more than 80 additional cities, including six in Mississippi, and this planned expansion, according to AT&T, will bring its 3G wireless services to nearly 350 leading U.S. markets by the end of 2008, including the 100 largest cities.

Additionally, AT&T plans to roll out the nation’s first High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) network by midyear, which is expected to provide faster capabilities to HSUPA-enabled laptop users.
