Datamonitor Releases Report on Role of iPhones in Healthcare Sector

Datamonitor has released a report on role of iPhones in the healthcare domain, following the announcement made by Apple (News - Alert) that third party developers will be allowed to create applications on iPhone.

Datamonitor analysis tells that the entry of iPhones into Healthcare field and the development of healthcare technology applications using iPhones, particularly Electronic Health records (EHRs) and Clinical Decision Support (CDS) will be lot of help for both healthcare practitioner and patients. Many healthcare technology vendors will be getting opportunity to develop applications on the iPhone (News - Alert).

Datamonitor is a provider of online data, analytic and forecasting platforms for key vertical sectors. With their forecasts they help companies to address complex strategic issues. They provide clients with unbiased expert analysis and in-depth forecasts for Automotive, Consumer Markets, Energy, Financial Services, Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare, Technology, Transport and Logistics.

Datamonitor’s analysis shows that Healthcare Practitioners/Physicians have been little hesitant in adopting EHRs and CDS during the past few years. It is believed that EHRs and CDS interfere in the relationship of doctor and patient, thereby slowing down doctor’s normal work pattern.

EHRs allow providers to access all the information of a patient in one place and thereby providing the doctor with more information, at the point of care. CDS tools help practitioners to sort through huge amount of patient data and medical literature for checking such as checking if a medication prescribed is going to interact with a drug the patient is already taking.

Datamonitor believes that with the advent of mobile devices like the iPhone into healthcare sector, can help alleviate technology related issues with doctors and encourage them to use new life-saving technologies.

Multi-functional iPhone which has a phone, camera, media device and web browser all in one device will be of great use for Healthcare providers who will have to carry a beeper, hospital-issued phone, cell phone, BlackBerry (News - Alert) and Tablet PC with them as they take rounds in the hospital. All the important features can be incorporated into iPhone.

According to Datamonitor, iPhone can be a great use for doctors who would like to take second advice from another doctor in complex cases or can be of great help in identifying a medicine, by using its camera and image storage feature.

According to Datamonitor,  iPhone’s vast storage of sound files will help doctors to have a refresh course on different sounds a heart can make when the heart valve is not functioning properly.

According to Datamonitor, iPhones easy touch-screen feature with zoom in and zoom out features help Doctors to look at images such as x-rays and MRIs, with minute details and thereby making quick diagnosis. iPhones ability to connect to Wi-Fi networks can help doctors to have an easy and fast access to internet.

With the present useful features and the future development of applications on iPhone will bring revolution and more functionality in healthcare technology and adoption to life saving devices by doctors will be more.

According to Datamonitor, present contract with AT&T (News - Alert) has come as a drawback for end-user adoption.

This analysis and research report was done by Christine Chang is an analyst on Datamonitor’s Public Sector Technology team who covers healthcare industry.
